OPEN THE GATE PAPA

I did a poster for the Haiti Poster Project.  All proceeds go to Doctors Without Borders for Haiti. Over 200 beautiful posters available for sale starting April 5th. Support a good cause and get something to replace that Samantha Fox poster over your couch.

After April 5th go to http://thehaitiposterproject.com/ to purchase.

HUGS NOT DRUGS

I just received the custom postage I ordered from Zazzle.com. Actually, I ordered it THREE TIMES and they cancelled it each time. Apparently they have people that view the stamps and if they find something they think is inappropriate they cancel it.
Someone thought that a pipe smoking gorilla was some kind of drug reference and they cancelled it THREE TIMES! I had to call and explain that it's for children's picture books and have someone review it again before they would approve it!

I like how they came out, but I'm looking for some other source for custom postage. Anyone know of a good one?

WIMPY KID

I did this piece for next months Atlantic Monthly. Apparently there is a huge following for the middle school book series Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It's been made into a movie and the article links the protagonist of this series as a new younger version of Holden Caufield of Catcher in the Rye fame.
The AD wanted to reference the art from the original Catcher in the Rye cover but in a new way that related to this middle school wimpy kid.

I submitted these three sketches and I was kind of hoping they would go for the top one. They loved the playground theme and the horse was a good link to the Catcher cover but they were afraid that the Wimpy Kid connection was lost.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is partly written and part cartoon with some very styled stick figurish people. They wanted something that looked more like the Wimpy Kid style so it was back to the drawing board. It is very strange to copy someone elses style of drawing and I struggled to figure out a way of integrating everything. Finally the solution was making the Wimpy Kid exactly like he is in the book and not integrating him with the background at all. Kind of like a sticker stuck on an old book. A challenging assignment but a fun outcome.

GOLDEN FROSTING

In the wake of the Awards Season, I was thinking if Sandra Bullock can win an Oscar, that we all deserve an award. So I created the Harry Sprinkles Award. Honor yourself today and have a cupcake.
Go on, you deserve it. Harry Sprinkles says you do, so it must be true.

NEW YAWK

Despite battling a head cold all week I still made it to the Society Of Illustrators Ad show on Friday night.
I was happy to have a couple pieces amongst some truly brilliant work.  Here is one of them in between former studiomates Chris Silas Neal on the top right and Grady Mcferrin on the left.

One of my favorite pieces in the show was this 3d piece that Grady did for an NPR calendar. It captures a moment we all have had and its an amazing construction. It's a shame that my crappy iphone photo doesn't show some of the details in the back.

And lastly, the MOF poster I did recently, happy to say its been selected for the upcoming Communication Arts Illustration annual as well.
